About

Ian Sklarsky is a visionary artist best known for his mastery of Blind Contour drawing, where he creates intricate and evocative works without ever glancing at the paper. This intuitive process allows him to distill the essence of his subjects into raw, unfiltered lines that are both abstract and deeply expressive. His unique ability to blend spontaneity with a deep emotional resonance has captivated art enthusiasts worldwide. Sklarsky’s artistic reach extends beyond the studio and into the world of fashion, with his work being featured in high-profile fashion lines in South Korea. His talent for creating compelling visual narratives also earned him the honor of crafting a large-scale mural at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, further cementing his international reputation.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Sklarsky is passionate about sharing his technique with others. He has hosted Blind Contour drawing sessions at SOHO House, where couples participate in creative, immersive date nights, learning to express themselves through lines and forms. His approach transforms the drawing process into a shared experience of connection and discovery. Sklarsky has also brought his expertise into schools, leading art classes where students explore their creativity and learn to embrace the imperfections of their art. Through these workshops and classes, Sklarsky empowers others to experience the freedom of Blind Contour drawing, making art accessible, collaborative, and deeply personal. His work, whether hanging in a gallery or brought to life by participants in his classes, continues to inspire and push the boundaries of contemporary art.

Although some portraits or drawings might have to be redone, most of the time the errors are what brings out the character. We are not perfect, we can’t be. To quote a friend, and MacArthur Genius Recipient for the performing arts; Taylor Mac, 'Perfection is for Assholes.' Our world is so driven to perfection that we often stop what we are doing simply because we know we cannot be perfect at it. GO – DO IT. FAIL. Failing is just another term for perfecting an action. If your science experiment blows up, you go back and do it again, and with some more errors, you might even get it right. Enjoy being imperfect. That’s the best part about people, we can be.

My art simply shows that there aren’t any wrongs, it’s the enjoyment of figuring out how to get from point A to point B with one line without looking and creating what you see."
